What is ideal body weight?
Ideal body weight (IBW) formulas were originally developed for clinical drug dosing but have become widely used as general health reference points. Each formula calculates a target weight based on height and gender, typically assuming a medium frame.
The four formulas
Devine (1974): Men = 50kg + 2.3kg per inch over 5ft; Women = 45.5kg + 2.3kg per inch over 5ft. The most widely used formula.
Robinson (1983): Men = 52kg + 1.9kg/inch; Women = 49kg + 1.7kg/inch.
Miller (1983): Men = 56.2kg + 1.41kg/inch; Women = 53.1kg + 1.36kg/inch.
Hamwi (1964): Men = 48kg + 2.7kg/inch; Women = 45.5kg + 2.2kg/inch.
Limitations
IBW formulas don't account for muscle mass, frame size, or body composition. A muscular athlete may weigh more than their "ideal" without being unhealthy. Use these as rough guides alongside BMI, body fat percentage, and overall health markers.
